CHAPEL OF PUERTO DE IBAÑETA
A modern chapel on the Ibañeta mountain pass, where the sound of the bell allowed pilgrims to find their way through the fog
This modern chapel, inaugurated in 1965, is located on the Ibañeta pass - a natural passage between Spain and France, used for centuries by soldiers, pilgrims and smugglers. It was built near the old chapel of San Salvador, founded in 1127, of which only the ruins remain. In the Middle Ages, the sound of its bell allowed pilgrims to find their way through the fog. The first hospital for Roncesvalles pilgrims was also built here.
