Hermitage founded on Mount Aldabe to commemorate the victory in the battle of San Marcial against the French troops
In the 16th century, Don Beltrán de la Cueva, Captain General of Gipuzkoa, had a hermitage built on Mount Aldabe to commemorate the victory over the French troops at the Battle of San Marcial on 30 June 1522. The first hermitage was destroyed in a fire and rebuilt in 1804. The tower dates from 1910. Next to the hermitage there is a viewpoint with a beautiful panorama of the whole town of Irún, the bay of Txingudi, Hondarribia, the Bidasoa River and Mount Jaizkibel. The GR 11 long-distance footpath runs through this area.
