CHARLES QUINT CASTLE
Charles V's castle in Hondarribia was modified many times by the Catholic kings.
The date of construction of the original building commissioned by Sancho Abarca of Navarre is uncertain, but the first improvements and fortification of this medieval castle are dated to 1190 by Sancho El Sabio, another Navarrese ruler. The building was modified many times by the Catholic kings, including a substantial expansion under Charles V. After passing through many hands since the eighteenth century, the castle has been owned by the municipality since 1929. It was restored in 1966 and turned into a tourist parador.
