MONTE URGULL
A place for a walk with views over the bay of San Sebastian, where the remains of the Castillo de la Mota in Donostia are located
Formerly a defensive bastion, Mount Urgull is now a place to take a stroll with magnificent views over the Bay of San Sebastián. Here are the remains of the Castillo de la Mota, an ancient 12th century fortress built by King Sancho of Navarre. The cannons placed on the watchtowers are a reminder that San Sebastián was an active military place between the 15th and 19th centuries in the face of regular attacks by French troops. A small museum in one of the castle's military outbuildings - La Casa de la Historia (House of History) - offers a journey through the history of the town, its traditions and festivals.
An infinite number of small paths allow you to climb the mountain, at the top of which stands the monument of the Sagrado Corazón (Sacred Heart), which is more than 12 metres high. Built in the 1950s by the Spanish sculptor Federico Coullaut-Valera, this statue has become one of the emblems of San Sebastián. On the north side of the mountain, the English cemetery remains a confidential place, where only a few curious people venture out to enjoy a dazzling panorama. Built in 1924, it preserves the graves of English soldiers who died in the First Carlist War. To the west, on the Paseo Nuevo that runs around the mountain, the imposing empty building by the Basque sculptor Jorge Oteiza seems to defy the force of the tides. On stormy days, only the most daring take this beautiful promenade where sometimes violent waves break.Did you know? This review was written by our professional authors.
