MUSEO VASCO DEL FERROCARRIL
Museum that presents one of the most complete railway collections in Europe with vehicles of all types in Azpeitia
The Urola railway was a narrow-gauge line linking the municipalities of Zumárraga and Zumaia through the Urola river valley. Inaugurated in 1926 by King Alfonso XIII, it was the first electric railroad in Spain. After its closure in 1988, the creation of the Museo Vasco del Ferrocarril (Basque Railway Museum) in Azpeitia preserved its old steam locomotives and various types of carriage.
The museum boasts one of Europe's most comprehensive railway collections, with vehicles of all types: steam locomotives, self-propelled vehicles, wooden and metal wagons... Some of them are over 100 years old, and are the subject of remarkable and considerable conservation work. You can also see the former mechanical workshop of the Urola Railway, whose installations have been perfectly preserved since 1925. Other attractions include model trains, the evolution of uniforms from the 19th century to the present day, black-and-white photographs and a remarkable collection of railway clocks... Enough to delight young and old alike! At weekends, the museum organizes excursions from Azpeitia to Lazao aboard the Aurrera steam locomotive, along the old Urola railway line. These excursions take place on Saturdays and Sundays between Easter and early November. A pleasant trip back in time!
