University with Renaissance architecture founded by Bishop Rodrigo Mercado de Zuazola in Onati
Founded in 1548 by Bishop Rodrigo Mercado de Zuazola, this university with Renaissance architecture was the first university in the Basque Country. Until its closure in 1901, it taught law, medicine, literature and theology. On its plateresque façade, decorated with bas-reliefs, there is a representation of its founder praying. Inside, note the Mudejar-inspired coffered ceiling and the Renaissance cloister decorated with portraits in medallions
