IGLESIA DE SAN NICOLÁS
Baroque church in front of the Arriaga Theater with a sober design, with a Greek cross plan topped by a dome
Built between 1743 and 1756 by the architect Ignacio de Ibero in honour of the patron saint of sailors, this baroque church stands opposite the Arriaga Theatre. It has a sober design, with a Greek cross plan topped by a dome, and two symmetrical towers on either side of the façade. Its portico, renovated in 1891, is decorated with a bronze tympanum by the sculptor Josep Llimona. Inside, the five Rococo altarpieces designed by Juan Pascual de Mena, who was one of the best sculptors of his time, are particularly noteworthy.
