PALACIO CHÁVARRI
This eclectic building, built in 1888, has been home to the Basque Government delegation for several years
Built in 1888, this eclectic, Flemish-influenced building was designed by architect Paul Hankar, a leading exponent of Belgian Art Nouveau. It was built for Víctor Chavárri, a leading industrialist of the time, who made it his family home. In his youth, Chavárri had studied at the University of Liège, where he developed a taste for Flemish architecture. After serving as the seat of the Vizcaya Civil Government between 1943 and 1947, it has for several years now been home to the Basque Government delegation.
