MUSEO DE ARTE SACRO / ELEIZ MUSEOA
Museum with the most important religious works in Bizkaia from the Romanesque period to the present day
The former convent of La Encarnación (16th century), once inhabited by the Dominican sisters, now houses the Museum of Sacred Art, which brings together the most important religious works in Bizkaia from Romanesque art to the present day. The collections come from churches, convents and hermitages throughout the province. The museum consists of a church and a beautiful cloister around which the various exhibition rooms are arranged, and houses magnificent silver liturgical objects, Basque silverware and ceremonial vestments (from the 16th to the 20th century). It also includes beautiful Gothic statues, such as that of the Virgin and Child (14th century) and a series of fifteen paintings on the life of Christ by the Neapolitan Luca Giordano, who was one of the most important painters of the Baroque period. Also noteworthy is Salvador Bofill's harpsichord dating from 1743, which is one of the few examples made in Spain of this type of instrument. The museum also has a library specializing in religious art. Good to know: since 2019 the museum has had an escape room called "La Abadía de Atxuri". A countdown experience in the museum, with puzzles to be solved in small groups of 2 to 6 people. An original way to explore the former Dominican convent and the works of the Museum of Sacred Art, particularly appreciated by the young public! Activity only available in Spanish, Euskera and English.
