LAS SIETE CALLES
This tangle of small alleys formed the heart of the city's commercial activity
The heart of old Bilbao is formed by these "seven streets", called "zazpi kaleak" in Basque. The oldest streets, Artekale, Somera and Tendería, were later joined by Belostikale, Carnicería Vieja, Barrenkale and Barrenkale Barrena. Documented since the 15th century, this tangle of small streets formed the heart of the city's commercial activity. Since the 1980s, it has been an entirely pedestrian area, with houses with typical Basque façades and lined with numerous pintxo bars and shops.
