PUENTE VIZCAYA
The Vizcay Bridge, designed by the Basque architect Alberto de Palacio, is one of the symbols of the industrial era in the Basque Country
If Getxo is especially worth a visit, it is for its famous Vizcaya Bridge (or puente colgante), a monumental ferry bridge that connects the city with Portugalete over the mouth of the Ibaizabal estuary. Designed by the Basque architect Alberto de Palacio and inaugurated in 1893, it was the first metal bridge with a suspended nacelle and has served as a model for many other similar bridges in Europe, Africa and the Americas, only a few of which have survived to the present day. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006, this prodigious 160-metre-long steel structure is one of the symbols of the industrial era in the Basque Country. Due to its innovative use of lightweight steel cables with alternative torsion, it is considered one of the most outstanding steel architectural constructions of the industrial revolution. By taking the pedestrian bridge 45 metres above the ria (access by lift), one can enjoy magnificent views of the mouth of the Nervión River, the port of Bilbao and Getxo.
Thrill-seekers can try out one of the adventure activities on offer: a climb up to the panoramic footbridge followed by an abseiling descent, or a bungee jump from the top of its 45 metres . Those who wish to try the experience must make a reservation in advance with the company Ojo Guareña Aventura (+34 660 77 00 67 - ojoguarenaaventura.com). If you're afraid of heights, don't!
