PLAZA DEL MACHETE ET LOS ARQUILLOS
Square surrounded by arcades in Victoria-Gasteiz with squares and houses with wrought iron balconies
Once upon a time, in this square, the mayor would pull out a machete and make the public prosecutor swear to defend the fueros of the city, under penalty of having his head cut off. Nowadays, in this square surrounded by arcades (arquillos) there are various markets and festivals. This 1802 complex of squares and houses with wrought iron balconies elegantly frames the Renaissance palace of Villa Suso. It is the emblem of the neoclassical district of Ensanche.
