PLAZA DE ESPAÑA
Square lined with arcades in Victoria-Gasteiz housing the town hall and a Hall of Mirrors
Designed by the neoclassical architect Justo Antonio de Olaguibel - a native of Vitoria -, like the arcades of the Plaza Machete, this square built at the end of the 18th century (it took 9 years of work, which took place precisely between 1781 and 1790) forms a perfect square bordered by arcades. The Plaza de España is also called Plaza Nueva (New Square) because it corresponds to a new expansion of the city of Vitoria, which was then gaining ground from its medieval centre. It houses the City Hall and the Ice Room.
