THE LABORATORY
Monument housing a center of art, industrial creation, various teaching centers and a theater
It is advisable to visit this monument, which really deserves its name, because everything here is monumental. Built at the request of General Franco by the architect Luis Moya, this building was first an orphanage for the children of miners, then a place to educate, house and train foremen and professionals from all over Spain, the reference site in terms of "monumentality" being El Escorial. If we note its magnitude as we approach, it is above all inside that the immensity is striking. In the asymmetrical main façade, the influence of the Chicago School can be seen. Once past the entrance, one reaches the central square of 8,300 square metres, distinguishing in the distance the silhouette of the tower that rises to the watchtower. The project for the interior was to reproduce a typical Spanish city, with its town hall, theatre, chapel, library and all the necessary accommodation for the resident students. After having taken a few tweeks with the place, the government of Asturias undertook in the years 2005 the renovation of this ideal city of Moya, an extremely complex space to take over, with two axes: to maintain its functions of formation and to make it a centre of cultural production of the XXI century. This is how a Laboral art and industrial creation centre is dealing with the relationship between art, technology and industrial creation. It also houses various teaching centres and a theatre. The highlight of the visit is the tower's viewpoint, which offers one of the best views of the city.
