Monastery with intact church, sacristy and library
Known as Escorial of Asturias, this monastery was one of the most powerful in the region. Founded in the 11th century by Counts Piniolo and Aldonza, it was ravaged by fire in 1763. Only the church, sacristy and library remained intact. It preserves two interesting cloisters and, in its 16th century church, beautiful Baroque altarpieces. The Romanesque Christ, known as de la Cantonesa, is from the 12th century. A parador now occupies the monastery.
