FONCALADA FOUNTAIN
Pre-Romanesque fountain near the cathedral, considered a rare example of a civil construction from the medieval period
Built around the year 900 during the reign of Alfonso III the Great, this pre-Romanesque fountain is located at the end of Calle Gascona, not far from the cathedral, next to an old Roman road. It is one of the few examples of a civil construction that has been maintained since medieval times. Its water comes from a spring that gushes out of the ground and is collected in a basin protected by a rectangular carved stone construction. It faces east and on the top of its façade is the Cross of Victory, the symbol of Asturias.
