MERCADO EL FONTÁN
Market with a cafeteria-restaurant and many small cafés, one of which has a terrace
It was after a fire in the old trading area at Christmas 1523 that Charles V granted Oviedo the opening of a free market, which was to be held every Thursday. From January 1524 he occupied the Fontán area, a former dried-up lagoon, the last visible vestige of which today is the fountain, Caño del Fontán, located in the square of the same name. Built in 1885 according to the plans of Javier Aguirre and rehabilitated in 1994, the current market is one of the buildings protected by the city of Oviedo. It is located in the Plaza del 19 de Octubre, between Fontán and Fierro streets, next to the San Isidro church. It has a 2,000 square metre sales area, mainly organised around stalls for meat, fish, fruit and vegetables, cheese and sausages. This market prides itself on supplying products with the Tourist Quality label. A cafeteria-restaurant completes the whole. The abundance and excellence of the products, the liveliness of the market and its surroundings, the presence of many small cafés, make a visit to the Fontán market a must during a stay in Oviedo. In the morning, you will be happy to go there to do your shopping and sit down on one of the terraces of the cafés opposite. There is also a beautiful old-fashioned haberdashery and many small outdoor stalls that humorously display their forest of umbrellas when the weather is good. For shopping, prefer the morning, avoid Mondays, with no auction, and know that Tuesday is the best day.
