It was once the favoured watering hole of famous Scottish poets such as Hugh MacDiarmid and Norman MacCaig and also had a reputation for being a hub of left-wing politics, so much so that the downstairs anteroom was nicknamed the “Little Kremlin”.
These days it’s part of the Belhaven chain, but it still has much of it’s old charm and character.
The beer is very good and reasonably priced, the staff are friendly and efficient and the surroundings are pleasant and clean.
I was there on a cold Thursday evening and the sight of a real fire was most welcoming.
I didn’t have food but I’d like to have a meal here at sometime in the future.
To be charged premium prices, you'd hope for a cleaner, less cluttered venue
11 out of 10 !!!!
It was very busy on NYE but there are plenty of seats as they have a large downstairs area.
Additionally, with 2 bars it's easy to get served quickly as one is always busier than the other.
