Overlooking Edinburgh Castle and Waverley Station, The Scotsman is a 4-star hotel built in 1905. It has a sublime baroque architecture. The hotel once housed the offices of the national newspaper The Scotsman, hence the name. Luxurious in every detail, the hotel combines Scottish hospitality with the comforts of the most modern establishments (DVD player and Internet access in the rooms, health club and spa, etc.). My wife and I just returned from a trip through London, Edinburgh and Dublin, and The Scotsman was the nicest of all the hotels we stayed in. It has a very old-world, grand feel to it, and the service matches the atmosphere. Our room was excellent, too, with a great view. And you can't beat the location — perfectly situated to walk to all sorts of Edinburgh destinations.

Tip: If you're arriving from the train station, look closely for the Market Street entrance...it's easy to miss.
