We stayed here for three nights in a relatively large deluxe room with a king bed for a family of three.
The location of the hotel was perfect - a short walk to the Royal Mile. The hotel literally bisects the Royal Mile, which means you turn left (uphill) and you are a short walk to Edinburgh Castle and if you turn right, you are a short walk downhill to Dynamic Earth and Palace of Holyroodhouse.
The hotel is also next to the restaurants of Grassmarket and across the street from National Museum of Scotland, which is great for kids (it’s got a T-Rex skeleton).
Great dining options next door include Mamas Comfort Food, which has a great steak and ale pie, and Bobby’s sandwich shop, which justifies its high rating. Other recommendations are Barry’s Fish and Chips (great ambience and service) on Victoria Street and Makar’s, which has a five star rating (we enjoyed the Wild Boar sausage and beef). All are next to the hotel.
Most importantly, the breakfast at the hotel was great. In particularly the man and woman (unfortunately, I didn’t get their names) serving us - very prompt and always helpful.
Update just completed stay. Will be back for a 3rd stay. 5 stars all around. Thank you for making my stay in the Burgh lovely.
Beau restaurant et plats excellents. Grand choix au petit déjeuner. Espace détente au salon appréciable.
Edit 2024 - not such a great spot for a wine tasting, the event was overbooked and the room far too small.
Wedding held here this week.
Great event, food really good quality, service pre and post dinner fantastic.
Stayed in the Lombard suite which was roomy, clean and well stocked. Only minor criticisms are that the Lombard suite is quite dark and the ceiling lighting is not good. This room would be transformed if the main chandelier was swapped for spotlights. Additionally the toiletries provided in the room were of 'fruity' scents, which for me, personally, did not smell great. Other than that, a great stay overall
Cleanliness - our room, the bar, restaurant and reception were all immaculately presented. 5/5
Facilities - the room was well spec'd throughout. Nice touch with the Bose Bluetooth speaker system. However there was an issue with laundry, so fewer towels than normal and only one bath robe between the two of us. 4/5
Sleep - despite it's central location our room had excellent triple glazing and traffic noise was a murmur. Bed and bedding was excellent. 5/5
Breakfast - Good choice of hot and cold food. It was good. 4/5
In short, a fabulously turned out hotel, well located to the royal mile.
Overlooking the lovely courtyard.
Reception were friendly, Albert was great.
Very good breakfast and decent bar.
Close to everywhere we wanted to go, 5mins from the Grassmarket and Edinburgh Castle.
Check in and out was smooth and efficient. Hotel staff were welcoming, friendly and helpful at all times.
We stayed in a standard room with ensuite bathroom. The room was spacious, comfortable and quiet, though there was some renovation work going on at the time, this was done with consideration and did not disturb us.
The hotel is located in the heart of Edinburgh's old town, an ideal location for Greyfriars Kirkyard, The Scotland National Museum and within easy walking distance of the Royal Mile.
