The largest Fire Festival in Europe traditionally takes place on April 30th each year on Calton Hill. Beltane means "sacred fire" in Gaelic and celebrates the blossoming of spring. This used to correspond to the movement of cattle to the summer pastures, but it is one of the main Celtic festivals. This gathering attracts nearly 12,000 people each year. Processions of acrobats and fire jugglers in traditional costumes enter the stage and spectacular performances follow in the afternoon and evening.
