The National Library regularly exhibits a selection of manuscripts, engravings and other works on paper on a variety of themes. Two temporary exhibitions are scheduled throughout the year. The John Murray Archive is on permanent display. Among other famous manuscripts, it includes the original of Charles Darwin's Origin of Species, as well as rare books in Scottish Gaelic and Lowland Scots, and old maps.
