BURRELL COLLECTION
The Burrell Collection is among the most valuable in the country. It was assembled by the wealthy shipowner William Burrell and donated to the city of Glasgow in 1944. Throughout his life, this art lover hunted down 8,000 valuable pieces, from his youth until his death. The result is grandiose and covers several media and several periods! There are now more than 9,000 pieces and 200 tapestries that are among the most beautiful in the world.
The finest works include paintings by Degas and Cézanne, a sculpture by Rodin, as well as objects from Islamic art and ancient Egypt dating back more than 2000 years, medieval weapons and tapestries, jades and porcelain from the Chinese Tang dynasty, ceramics from the Mongol Empire, and Romanesque and Gothic stained glass. The museum is free, as William Burrell believed in free education and wanted the museum to be available to everyone. Before you visit, you can see the top 30 most beautiful works the museum has on the website.
This sublime collection offers you a journey through 6,000 years of history, which is unique in the world! Before you go, check the museum's agenda, as they often offer masterclasses, workshops or specific tours such as tours on the hidden history of the works, masterclasses on tapestries. There are many free events every day. All you have to do is to pay attention to the date and choose your activity.
