This red sandstone citadel rises above a river. The massive keep is the oldest part of the building. It was built in the 13th century by the Moray family to protect themselves from the English during the Scottish War of Independence. Once it passed into the hands of Edward I, King of England, who finally achieved his goal, a cannon seat was added to the castle grounds, facing Glasgow. The castle then changed much in appearance over the centuries, with each of its successive owners adding new extensions.
