CULZEAN CASTLE & COUNTRY PARK
Culzean Castle is an architectural marvel, standing proudly on the cliffs overlooking the Firth of Clyde. A Kennedy family stronghold since the 14th century, it was completely remodeled between 1770 and 1792 by the dazzling Robert Adam. The transformation was intended to reflect the wealth of its owner, who spared no expense. Unfortunately, neither he nor the architect survived to see the work through to completion. Yet the building is such an important part of Scotland's heritage that it even features on some £5 bills. It's easy to spend a day wandering its rooms and 260-hectare grounds, which include an orangery, walled garden, greenhouses, lake, deer park, cliffs, beaches and even a grotto. General and U.S. President Eisenhower himself stayed here several times, and was given apartments for life for his decisive role in the Second World War. During your visit, don't miss the splendid oval staircase, the armory with its collection of military pistols and swords, and the Round Drawing Room.
With children: Two playgrounds are sure to please: Adventure Cove and Wild Woodland. Huts, slides, labyrinth, climbing, tree adventure: they'll be back for more!
Park only : Depending on the time you have available, it's also possible to visit only the estate park. You'll then benefit from a reduced rate.
