DUNOLLIE MUSEUM, CASTLE AND GROUNDS
To visit Dunollie is to visit 3 sites. First, Dunollie Castle: its ruins, with a final tranche of renovation completed in 2019, offer superb panoramic views over Oban Bay. Then there's the house museum: a 1745 house whose every room has been restored and fitted out to display 19th-century artefacts that bear witness to the daily lives of its occupants. From the kitchen to the children's bedrooms, you'll discover everything about family life in the 1800s. The museum also tells the story of the MacDougall clan and, through the clan's saga, traces the entire history of Scotland. Then there's the park: its itinerary invites visitors to gain a better understanding of the various invasions that have marked the great moments in Scotland's history. It's also an opportunity to learn more about Viking civilization and mythology.
Regularly during the school vacations, the site offers 1-hour hands-on workshops for children (cost £5), which can be an excellent way of introducing them to English. You can also take a guided tour at no extra cost, or organize your own special tour: child-friendly, with a focus on gardens, antique textiles..
Lunch, picnics and snacks can be enjoyed on site, thanks to The Kettle café and its menu of homemade, gourmet products at mini prices.
