ARMADALE CASTLE - GARDENS & MUSEUM OF THE ISLES
Armadale Castle was built in 1815 for Lord MacDonald of Sleat, when the clan moved here after leaving their successive residences in Duntulm Castle and Monkstadt House.
In 1925, the MacDonalds abandoned Armadale and settled in Ostaig. The site now houses the ruins of the castle, the Museum of The Isles and superb landscaped gardens. To visit the museum, take the audioguide in French, even if it is not your usual practice! Through a lively and exciting journey, you will discover the cultural influence of the Gael world under the reign of the Lords of the Isles. You will finally know everything about the Celts, the Vikings and understand how the islands and the Isle of Skye in particular were at the centre of the Celtic and Highland realms (the inlets were their routes) while the land was on the periphery. One of the best retrospectives on the history of Scotland, full of concrete examples and even suspense!
