Built in 1856 for Queen Victoria, this superb castle is a highly refined example of Scottish Baronial architecture . Queen Elizabeth II visited it regularly and died here, but it is not strictly speaking a royal residence. The building does not belong to the Crown, but to the family who wear it, and is therefore privately owned. The tour is interesting, but don't expect to see everything. Only the ballroom and exhibition space are accessible. Most of the tour takes place outdoors in the gardens.
