ARBROATH

In Scotland, Arbroath is also the place where the independence of Scotland was declared to be the home of lochfyne (fish fumeries). Arbroath Abbey, founded in 1178 by William the Lion and dedicated to Saint Thomas de Canterbury, is now in ruins. Important parts remain, however, including the residence of an abbot. The Déclaration declaration took place here in 1320. William the Lion was buried there. The Arbroath Signal Tower Museum covers, among other things, a large aspect of local life and the flax industry that supported the economy during the industrial revolution.
