These two impressive ruins were the residences of the bishops of Orkney from the 12th and 17th centuries respectively. The medieval Bishop's Palace is a sturdy edifice with fine views of St Magnus Cathedral, while Earl's Palace was a model of refinement in its day. With its Renaissance architecture, turrets and vast rooms, it's easy to imagine how superb it once was. Today, they offer a glimpse of their former grandeur.
