BROUGH OF BIRSAY
You'll need to check the tides before visiting this small island, access to which is entirely dependent on them. Interesting Pictish and Viking remains can be seen here, although they are much more recent than the surrounding attractions. The area was densely populated between the 7th and 13th centuries, and witnesses to the past include a large Celtic stone (a replica of the original is on display in Edinburgh), ruins of Scandinavian dwellings and a Romanesque church. The info point features information and objects found during excavations.
