One of the best (and most beautiful) theatres in St. Petersburg. Founded in the aftermath of the revolution on Gorky's initiative, supported by the Petersburg celebrities of the time (A. Lunatcharski, A. Blok, M. Andreeva, Y. Yurieva), it was marked, from 1956 onwards, by the exceptional personality of Tovstonogov, a genius director. This theater is now home to K. Lavrov, who became his principal director, O. Bassilashvili, A. Freindlich or V. Kovel. The second stage is located at Ploshchad' Starogo teatra, 13 (M° Krestovskiy ostrov).
