The synagogue in St Petersburg, by its size and the ostentatious luxury of its decoration, at least inside, is also a testimony to the religious tolerance observed in the former capital at the beginning of the century. It was inaugurated in 1893. The large prayer hall is richly decorated with columns with gilded capitals and imposing chandeliers. Although many joined Israel at the fall of the USSR, some 100,000 Jews now live in St. Petersburg.
