At the foot of St. Alexander Nevsky Lavra and stretching almost a kilometre (905.70 m) above the Neva River, it is the longest in St. Petersburg. Inaugurated in 1965, its construction was a real technological challenge for the engineers in charge of the project, all the more so as its central span rises to allow boats to pass through. Its solidity was put to the test as it was tested with tank columns before it was opened to traffic.
