It presents the largest collection of Fabergé eggs in the world and repatriates masterpieces scattered throughout the 20th century.
It is one of the recent additions to the heritage of St. Petersburg. This beautiful private museum opened its doors in 2013. After buying and repatriating works from all over the world, it exhibits major pieces of Russian heritage that had left the country during the turbulent 20th century. The museum is located in the Shuvalov Palace, which has been specially renovated to house the permanent collections. It displays the world's largest collection of Fabergé eggs. Each of them are masterpieces of the jeweller's art, as well as unique historical monuments. The most precious of them are the 9 that are intimately linked to the private lives and offices of the last two emperors of Russia: Alexander III and Nicholas II. The chivalric hall contains silver military souvenirs. The Red Room presents objects produced in the years 1810-1840 by the first Russian jewellers. The white-blue hall exhibits Russian porcelain from the 19th century. The Gothic Hall houses Russian icons made of precious materials (metals and stones). The museum also has paintings by impressionists such as Renoir. The high-tech lighting of the paintings requires special attention. In the darkened room, projectors hanging from the ceiling only illuminate the paintings, highlighting their materials and perspectives in such a way that it almost looks as if these works are seen in 3D.
