ZOOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF THE ACADEMY OF SCIENCES
It is the zoological department of the Kunstkamera, founded in 1832. The museum has one of the world's largest collections of naturalized or fossilized animals, with nearly 30,000 specimens. At the top of the stairs, a huge skeleton of a blue whale blows us away. Rare specimens of birds (including an impressive collection of tiny hummingbirds) and mammals make up the bulk of these collections. Also a large number of butterflies and beetles from all over the world. But the main attraction is of course the 40,000-year-old Berezovski mammoth, which was extracted from the Siberian ice in 1903. No relation to the sulphurous oligarch who allegedly committed suicide in London in 2003. It takes its name from the river Berezovka, on whose banks it was found. Since 1977, he has enjoyed the company of the baby mammoth, Dima, discovered in the Magadan region of the Russian Far East, facing the Kamchatka peninsula. You can also discover Titan, Peter the Great's dog, as well as Lisette, his mare! Each species is represented in its natural environment, through paintings or models depicting forests, mountains, etc. The sets are certainly very kitsch and a little dusty, but they really show the animals, making them more real than life! This visit is a must for children, who won't know where to start.
