STROGANOV'S PALACE
This scale model of the Winter Palace was built for the aristocratic Stroganov family by the architect Rastrelli, the same one who started the construction of the Winter Palace at about the same time. The Stroganov Palace will be completed, one suspects, much earlier, in 1754. Marking the corner of the Nevsky Prospect and the Moska Canal, its pearl-pink facade flanked by a flight of white columns and pediments with bronze edgings offers an elegantly baroque foretaste of the Winter Palace. But as for the rich collection of works of art gathered by the Stroganovs - who gave ministers and patrons to the empire, A. Stroganov was the president of the Academy of Fine Arts - it went to enrich the Hermitage Museum. Another bequest of this prestigious family to Russia was the famous Stroganov or Stroganoff beef, a great pleasure of Russian palaces. Non-culinary experiences will take place behind the walls of the palace after the October Revolution, since it will now house a research institute. After the fall of the Soviet Union, the Palace was attached to the Russian Museum (1991). The Stroganov Palace then found an owner who was closer to the artistic concerns of its first occupants. Restored on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of Saint Petersburg, the palace was further enriched with seven rooms dedicated to imperial porcelain from the Lomonossov factories.
