MUSEUM OF URBAN SCULPTURE
The territory of Saint-Alexandre-Nevsky Laure offers an exceptional setting for this unique St Petersburg museum. Founded in 1936-1937, it pays tribute to the city's sculptural heritage, including funeral sculpture. It is housed in the church of the Annunciation, the oldest building in Laure, built in 1722 by Trezzini and houses the tombs of th-century statesmen or Russian personalities such as Marshal Suvorov, Hannibal, L's abyssinian ancestor, and some of the children of Pierre the Great. This tribute to burial art is explained by historical cemeteries which extend to the territory of Saint-Alexandre-Nevsky Laure, whose necropolis has been open to visitors since 1947. Princess Nathalie, the sister of Pierre the Great, is buried in the Lazarevski cemetery, the oldest of the city, created in 1710 by his brother, and the great Russian scholar Lomonosov is also buried.
