Behind Saint-Isaac, you can see the Manege whose facade is decorated with statues of Castor and Pollux. In the centre stands the statue of Peter the Great wanted by Catherine II and completed by Falconet in 1770. On December 14, 1825, officers demanded the adoption of a Constitution and formed a square around the statue of Peter the Great to prevent the Assembly from swearing in Nicholas I. Loyalist troops harshly repressed this "uprising of the Decembrists".
