Built between 1792 and 1796 by order of Catherine II by the famous architect Giacomo Quarenghi, for his grandson Alexander Pavlovitch on the occasion of his marriage, the futureAlexandre Ier, this palace is the finest example of classicism in Tsarskoye Selo. Later, the palace will be inhabited by the grandson ofNicolas Ier, the future Alexandre III. Nicolas II stays there permanently from 1905 et it is for him that several interiors have been refurbished. After the Revolution, il y is under house arrest with his family until his departure for Tobolsk. Il faut remember that it was in the Alexander Palace that great technical innovations made their first appearance. In the middle ofXIXe siècle: air heating, running water, electromagnetic telegraph; under Nicolas II: electricity, telephone, elevator, film projector.
The right wing has now become a museum, which it is planned to extend later to the entire palace. The main exhibition is dedicated to Nicolas II and its famille ; in one of the rooms documentary films about his reign are shown. The marriage of Nicholas II is the first current affairs film. The surprisingly well-preserved interiors make this museum a unique place.
