STONE PALACE III
The palace is located in the eastern part of the Oranienbaum Park. The nearest entrance is on the side of Stravinsky Square. Built between 1758 and 1762 by the Italian architect Antonio Rinaldi, the Palace of Peter III may be worth a visit. Le duc Peter Feodorovich inherited the Russian throne in 1742. A lover of the arts of war, he had a fortress built with the commander's house, the arsenal and the chamberlain's residence. Il ne remains more of this ensemble than the palace and the gate of honour. You can visit the palace, which is comfortably furnished. Il s is a modest building with a square plan, with a cut corner where the entrance is arranged. Il ne has only six rooms, each of which has retained some of its original decoration.
You will especially notice the painting room, the largest in the palace. Depending on the circumstances, it was used as a dining room or reception room. As its name suggests, the paintings are at the heart of its decoration. There are 58 of them, forming a real tapestry on the walls. Although they are assorted by genre and colour, they form a rather heterogeneous ensemble, where master paintings coexist with works of mediocre quality. They are the work of Italian, Dutch, German and Flemish artists from the first half of XVIIIe siècle.
The work cabinet of Pierre III is richly decorated with dark green lacquer panels. Their intense colour is enhanced by the whiteness of the mouldings.
