This beautiful monastery overlooks the Volga from the hills. It was established around 1350 by a monk from the Pechersk Lavra Monastery in Kiev (hence the name). Of the four churches within the enclosure, the most impressive is the Cathedral of the Ascension (Вознесенский собор), which dates from the 17th century and whose interior paintings and iconostasis are truly splendid. Indeed, although the monastery was closed during the years of communism, it has been properly maintained.
