Herm, the former property of the Crown of England, was acquired in 1947 by the states of Guernsey; it has always been left for rent. All of its resources are managed by the tenants residing in the manor house, a residence of the th century. At the entrance is a "work", a device used to immobiliser horses or steers, in particular to deal safely with hooves. This recalls that in the th century, the carriers who came to exploit the granite of the island used oxen to tow stone blocks.
