MOUNT HOOD
Mount Hood is the pride of the region. Located 60 miles east of Portland, this volcano is the apex of Oregon State (3 426 metres). This is the fourth highest in the Cascade chain.
Mount Hood emerged more than 500 000 years ago. The volcano is still active, though sleeping since the 1820 s. Several glaciers cover the slopes of the volcano, which may be catastrophic in the event of eruption.
This mountain is one of the favourite places for mountaineers, and it is the second, after Mt. Fuji in Japan, to welcome so many adventurers. Sam Barlow in 1845 opened the way to his summit. Among the points of interest of the volcano, the Timberline Lodge, and the ski resorts are very popular.
