The Association des Femmes Burkinabè de Ouahigouya (AFBO) was created in 1977 on the initiative of three women, including Madeleine Barry, a great Burkinabe woman who died in 2003, who devoted her life to the self-promotion of women and girls, to the support of women who were alone or in difficulty (divorced women excluded from the family, widows, etc.), to the fight against malnutrition and to the education of children. The centre of Ouahigouya was built with the help of Switzerland and operates in partnership with the French cities of Vence and Chambéry. Women come to work there during the week, which allows them to be financially independent to feed their children. The centre also has a nursery and primary school. On the spot, you can buy items made by the women: fabrics, shea butter, very pretty tablecloths, etc., and eat at the Kadiami restaurant, run by one of the women who prepare good African dishes there.
