LARGE MOSQUE
Go there and contact
The main mosque, known as Great Mosque, is part of a complex of several mosques (9 in total): two at the village level (La Grande and La Petite à la Bourg) and 7 small mosques in the hills, which can be admired on the hills surrounding the main building. Every day of the week is associated one of the small mosques. A mandatory guide leads to the visit of the Great Mosque. The guides can be found at their office at Hotel Fofo. From here, we are 2 minutes away from the imposing hall of the mosque. After crossing the great courtyard, it is possible to visit the interior of the mosque, punctuated by an impressive multitude of columns supporting the building. The whole is a feeling of intimacy, serenity and freshness that surprises after dry dry heat. It is possible to access the roof of the building: a narrow staircase leads to the minaret, which elegantly emphasizes its apparent wooden structure, also serving scaffolding for the upkeep of the earth walls. On the ground floor, we walk between the 100 pillars that support the mosque. After the visit, there is a great chance that young girls will offer the traveller some small things to buy: braided baskets, containers and shady of calabash with drawings, pottery… An opportunity, among many others, to participate in the local economy!
