WASHINGTON METRO

The D.C. metro is very clean, quite dark and safe, even if we can't say that an effort has been made on the decoration. It is also easy to find your way around and the system is efficient. You will be impressed by the giant Escalators that allow you to get out of the depths. There are 6 lines, red, orange, blue, green and yellow, and the grey (silver) line which has been in service since 2014 and joins Dulles Airport. The subway is an omnibus. Tickets can be purchased at the entrance of the metro, in large automatic machines. If you have just arrived, you will first have to buy a SmarTrip card for US$2, which you fill in with the desired amount. Get into the subway by simply placing it against the turnstile. The amount is debited at your exit according to the distance covered. The amount paid is displayed on a small screen, as well as the amount left on your card. This one is rechargeable at will. If you get on the bus after the subway using your SmarTrip, you will get a discount of US$0.50 on the transfer.
The different lines:
Red line: Glenmont / Shady Grove.
Orange line: New Carrollton / Vienna.
Blue line: Franconia-Springfield / Largo Town Center.
Green line: Branch Avenue / Greenbelt.
Yellow line: Huntington / Fort Totten.
Grey line: Wiehle-Reston East / Largo Town Center
