MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. MEMORIAL
Memorial dedicated to the memory of Pastor King, inaugurated by the American President Barack Obama.
At the distance of Lincoln Memorial and Jefferson Memorial, this memorial is dedicated to the memory of Pastor King (1929-1968), not far from the steps on which he gave his most famous speech. Opened since 2011, it is the work of the Chinese artist Lei Yixin. This is the first memorial dedicated to an African-American on the Mall. It was inaugurated by US President Barack Obama, of whom Martin Luther King is one of the personal heroes.
When you arrive on the spot, you will immediately see the large white statue that stands out from a granite block symbolizing the mountain of despair. Here, Martin Luther King faces us, before the Pawn Basin, crossed and determined, with all his greatness of thought and soul. A little further, a long wall displays its most famous maxims. Such a memorial on the Nationall Mall is a symbol for the Afro-American community, at least as much as the recent opening of the National Museum of Afro-American Culture and History.
