PRESIDENT LINCOLN'S COTTAGE
Site became National Historic Landmark in 1973 and proclaimed National Monument in 2000. In Gothic style, this cottage is part of a set of buildings serving a rest house for American veterans since 1851. If President James Buchanan was the first to use it as a temporary residence during his tenure, it was Lincoln who spent the most time in cottage, almost a quarter of his presidency in total and in particular the summer, when the suffocating heat of downtown Washington l.
