RENWICK GALLERY
Go there and contact
Affiliated with the Smithsonian Institution since 1972. The building designed by architect Renwick was built in 1858 to house the collection of William Wilson Corcoran, a wealthy Washington banker. At the time, it was known as the American Louvre. The museum is best known for its beautiful Grand Salon, at the top of the stairs. Long furnished in the spirit of the 19th century and decorated in the Victorian style (1870-1880), it was completely renovated in 2015, in a more contemporary style. On the second floor, Ghost Clock by Wendell Castle, which appears to represent a clock covered with a white sheet, surprises visitors. We also discover a heterogeneous mix of design, jewellery and other objects, including the unmistakable Mandara, by Lino Tagliapietra made of Murano glass; Game Fish, by Larry Fuente (fun and colourful, with ordinary objects such as coins, toys, dice...); designer tableware (fork, spoon, cup...). Temporary exhibitions on the ground floor are always highly anticipated.
